Mt Ruapehu is located in the World Heritage Tongariro National Park.
Mt Ruapehu is home to the North island's only two commercial ski areas, Whakapapa & Turoa, & provides a unique skiing experience in that it is an active volcano & part of a duel World Heritage Area. Ohakune, the apres ski capita, of the North Island, is located an easy 20 minute drive from Turoa Ski Area, Ohakune is a great option for families & those's keen to dance the night away. Closest to Whakapapa Ski area is Whakapapa Village (20 min's drive) or the trout fishing capital of New Zealand, Turangi ( 40 min's drive)
