Skiing might be considered a winter sport, but spring might just be our favourite time of year to go skiing in NZ. Why? There’s a heap of good reasons. Let’s start with these five:

1. Lift pass discounts, more accommodation
It’s that time of year when the price is just right. Lift pass specials are now available on most mountains, so get ‘em while they’re hot! And with school holidays in the rear-view mirror for now, demand for accommodation in NZ’s ski areas is much lower, meaning you can find some great deals on amazing places to stay. Better deals on the mountain mean more pocket money off the mountain, too.

2. Better snow, better conditions
With a whole winter’s worth of snowfall in place, the ski fields of NZ are stocked with a healthy base of snow. The Remarkables and Cardrona are enjoying recent dumps offering powder conditions. Coronet Peak’s outstanding snowmaking facilities ensure there’s quality snow even at lower altitudes. Mt. Hutt in Canterbury has over a metre base, as do Whakapapa and Turoa up in the North Island. With the conditions warming up, skiers and boarders can enjoy softer powder conditions and fewer patches of ice than in the early season.

3. Less crowds
As fewer people flock to the mountains in spring, you’ll enjoy more room to move on every run. With the midwinter peak done, the month between mid–August and mid–September offers quieter slopes and a chance to make the mountain your own giant playground.

4. Bluebird Days for days
Sun’s out, guns out? Not quite… but the clear skies above certainly make for those incredible blue bird days that will have you feeling like it’s celebration time. Warmer temperatures mean you can ease back on wearing all those heavy layers. Spring is the time for thermals, a t shirt and a jacket. The days are getting longer, and visibility is greatly improved, so break out your sunglasses from their winter hibernation and get to looking your best on the slopes, because even if your ski technique needs work, your outfit can be on point, right?

5. Party Vibes are here
Even though spring is traditionally Queenstown’s “quiet” season, the alpine town still goes off. The events calendar gets busier and busier as the days get longer and the sun comes to play. The famous Lupin blossoms in Central Otago paint the paddocks and roadsides with incredible streaks of colour. Likewise, in the North Island, spring brings adventure capital Taupo to life, just an hour’s drive from the Mt. Ruapehu ski fields. Whether you’re down south or up north, it’s time to get amongst those off–mountain adventures. Book a jet boat ride, or a wine tour, or grab some bikes, hit the trails and admire those snowy mountain peaks from below.
