Discovering the Secrets of Soho Basin

Shhhhhh, it’s a secret! But, seeing as it won’t be for much longer, and we’re pretty terrible at keeping secrets, we’ll let you in on it. It’s the talk of the town in Wanaka and Queenstown, and it’s not even open yet… what could it be?

Soho Basin. Remember the name, because it’s NZ’s biggest and most exciting ski area, and it’s coming to life right now!

Where is Soho Basin?

Soho Basin is located in the Cardrona Valley, a 40–minute drive from Wanaka and just an hour from Queenstown. This new ski–field is built on a haven of pristine land in the heart of the untouched world; it occupies the face of the mountain behind the existing Cardrona ski–field.

What is Soho Basin all about?

Soho is an intimate backcountry ski–field which connects directly to Cardona Alpine Resort to form Cardrona–Soho; New Zealand’s largest ski area. When combined, the skiable area is a massive 900 hectares — more than double the current 345 hectares at Cardrona. Cardona–Soho dwarfs any other ski–field in NZ! The amazing terrain is packed with immaculate backcountry runs, chutes and bowls, plus more straightforward groomed runs. This is the new kiwi paradise for intermediate and advanced skiers. But there’s more to Soho than just skiing, you’ll be captivated by the incredible vistas ranging all the way from the Wakatipu Basin across to Fiordland and the West Coast. Plans are also currently in motion for Mt. Cardrona Station, a luxury alpine village on the doorstep of Cardrona. With construction commencing soon on a boutique hotel, 18–hole golf course, parks and lakes, it’s set to be the New Zealand’s hottest new ski village.

Can I ski Soho right now?

Soho Basin is currently available to ski only via bespoke bookings. This consists of a full day’s skiing on the incredible terrain, with access via heated snow cats; there are no chairlifts at this time (but they are coming in future). Also included is a gourmet three–course lunch with Amisfield wine at the Alpine hut. If you’re planning a ski trip in 2020 and beyond, you need to include Soho on your to–do list.
